MOSSEL BAY NEWS - This week the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) presented an induction programme in Mossel Bay for councillors from the Mossel Bay and Hessequa municipalities.
Several important topics were discussed in depth, including the numerous pieces of legislation and policy relevant to local government, the role of councillors as ethical leaders in municipal management and the importance of the various role players and stakeholders in local government processes.
Representatives of, among other, the National Treasury and Auditor-General's office, gave important insights and overview of their activities, including the importance of clean audit reports.
Councillors were encouraged and asked penetrating questions that were expertly answered.
Key items such as the necessity and impact of the National Development Framework, Provincial Growth and Development Strategies, the new District Development Model and Municipal Integrated Development Planning (IDP), as well as the role of the Spatial Development Framework and Rural Economic Development (ROR), were discussed and gave rise to many interesting discussions between the councillors and facilitators.
The facilitators remarked on the discipline and participation of the councillors in the sessions and lauded both Hessequa and Mossel Bay municipalities for their political stability, repeated clean audits and the other achievements that make the districts preferred destinations for investment and semigration.
Mossel Bay executive mayor, Alderman Dirk Kotzé, concluded the proceedings by thanking SALGA, the facilitators and organisers for a well-run, valuable induction programme.
He stressed the importance of ongoing training and encouraged councillors to attend the various courses on offer and seize every opportunity for continued studying and training.
Delegates agreed that the induction programme was beneficial to their role as leaders in local government and helped equip them for their important task.
