MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Twenty-six people were added to the adorable dogs and cuddlesome cats being housed at the Mossel Bay branch of the Garden Route SPCA last weekend, but they have been released since on the grounds of compassionate behaviour.
The 26 who braved discomfort for an overnight stay at the SPCA as part of the Sleepathon fundraiser, included the chairman of the Mossel Bay Business Chamber, Albert Wiffen, who spent 21 hours at the SPCA.
This was done in aid of the SPCA's drive to raise funds for its sterilisation campaign.
David Silkstone, Paul Moller and Vic le Roux joined Wiffen for the whole 21-hour stay.
The time of 21 hours was decided on to commemoration the branch's 21st birthday this year. The lodgers checked in on Friday, 19 November, and stayed the night. Among them were other local business owners, including shark cage diving operator, Christo Kruger and hotel chef Emile Nel.

There was a festive atmosphere, with DJ Alfonso Conradie on the decks and dancing by a group of traditional dancers from the surrounding neighbourhoods.
From early on, a campfire was crackling and eats provided. This included Lady and the Tramp spaghetti, paw-printed cupcakes, doggy poo-style meringues and bone-shaped biscuits. The biscuits may feature as another of the SPCA's fundraising initiatives.
"Our sterilisation project aims to sterilise 2021 animals in the Garden Route at an average cost of approximately R450. All funds raised will be used for the sterilisation of 2 021 cats and dogs," explains Andelean Silkstone from the SPCA.
According to Silkstone, studies and statistics confirm the long-term benefits of sterilisations which include improved health for animals, reducing undesirable behaviours, and preventing unwanted animals, thus, preventing overpopulation and the resulting neglect and the abuse of animals.
"It really was the most delightful stay. In the early evening the fire was crackling and delicious food was on offer. There was such a wonderful atmosphere, being so close to nature. We all got to know each other a lot better and even danced, never mind the rain," said SPCA board member, Denise Lloyd, who stayed the night.
"The SPCA thanks all the participants, volunteers, business people and members of the public who came to show their support during the course of the 21 hours. To all the sponsors who supported the participants and staff at the Mossel Bay branch who helped with the organisation, thank you."
