MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Last week the Mossel Bay Advertiser published an article about Da Nova resident Ray Thackray's perfectly preserved pear in a bottle.
He has had it since 1984. We asked readers to let us know if they also had fruits preserved in alcohol.
Raynier van Rooyen of Dana Bay contacted us, saying he had cherries in brandy dating back to 1978.
Impressive! Raynier also has a bottle of Chianti, which he bought in December 1980.
Erika Nel sent us us a photo of her liqueur with a pear in the bottle.
She wrote: "We have a sealed bottle, bought in 1985 in a Portuguese restaurant in Pretoria. It is for sale."
A second Dana Bay resident, At Hattingh, also has a bottle of liqueur with a pear in it which he received for his birthday in April 1987. At said: "The bottle has never been opened and is still totally sealed."
He said he always had to intervene during family gatherings, to ensure the bottle was not opened.
On At's bottle are the words: "Bon Chretien - The mystery of the pear in the bottle.
"As the pear blossom meets the bottle, the unique pairing begins ... the bottle is then filled with delectably smooth pear aperitif to create a special blend of nature's finest."
With that mouth-watering, tempting description, one wonders how on earth At has managed to keep the bottle unopened.
Thank you to our readers who joined in the fruity fun and sent us their photographs and descriptions.
