MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Good news to all residents is that the Mossel Bay Municipality intends to change the way refuse is collected.
As of 1 July, the municipality will be implementing a three-bag collection system in an effort to encourage residents to sort their waste before it is put out for collection.
As from 1 July, the municipality will introduce black, blue and green refuse bags as part of its waste diversion and waste minimisation strategy. Residents are encouraged to sort waste according to the types of waste according to each colour bag:
- BLACK: All non-recyclable waste
- BLUE: Recyclable waste
- GREEN: Garden refuse
Collection day
All three bags must be placed out simultaneously on the day refuse is normally collected in your area. The municipality’s refuse removal services will collect the black bags and contracted service providers will collect the blue and green bags.
Please note
However, the community is urged not to place any recyclable material such as paper, milk carton, plastics and cardboard in the black bag. No wet waste should be disposed of in the blue bag either, as it contaminates the quality of the recycling material.
Organic waste like food, egg shells and wet waste must ideally be composted. For more information on how to do home composting, contact the Waste Management and Pollution Control Department (044 606 5143).
New service
The green bag is the new bag and the public is requested to use it only for garden refuse. Although this new service addresses garden waste, composting is still the desired way to dispose of garden, organic and wet waste.
Each household will receive 13 of each colour bags per quarter and the bags will mostly be delivered during the second month of each quarter.
Green waste can be disposed of at the Louis Fourie and Great Brak River waste facilities.
The new system aims to improve the overall waste management in the greater Mossel Bay municipal area. Due to the shortage of the landfill airspace at PetroSA, the municipality promotes all waste minimisation methods, including diversion of garden and organic waste from landfill.
