MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The cost containment legislation has been under discussion for a number of years and the Mossel Bay Municipality has taken a very pro-active stance in implementing the legislation.
In the opinion of the municipality the legislature is a step in the right direction to ensure that municipalities are run as efficiently as possible, said the municipal manager, Adv Thys Giliomee in response to legislation that was promulgated in this regard.
The municipality expects to encounter a tough economic environment in the coming years wherein the continued focus on cost control would be a high priority backed up by legislation as from the 1 July 19.
"The legislature places a priority on six areas which are Advertising, Consultant fees, Travelling, Credit cards , Catering and Overtime pay. When the current year Adjustment budget (2018/19) and 2019/20 budget are compared Advertising, Consultant fees and Overtime pay is expected to decrease by 4%, 8% and 21% respectively whilst travelling and catering increases by 16% and 24% respectively and will be monitored closely to check if any cost savings can be achieved.
"The Mossel Bay entertainment allowance is currently R2 500 and will be reduced to the stipulated R2 000.
The municipality's existing Expenditure Policy will be expanded to include the elements of the legislation not currently included and will be renamed The "Expenditure and Cost Containment Policy". None of the employees of the municipality make use of a municipal credit card," Adv Giliomee added.
