MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Marine Rescue Coordination Centre in Cape Town has confirmed that the yacht, Panacea, reported as overdue, has been located by a passing tanker.
The yacht was located approximately 35 nautical miles south east of Cape Agulhas.
The tanker, Front Clipper, has tried to confirm the presence of life onboard the yacht, but due to heavy sea conditions and vessel size it could not be established with certainty.
According to spokesperson, Tebogo Ramatjie, the MRCC has requested the NSRI to launch their Offshore Rescue Craft from the Hermanus station to proceed to the vessel, establish the situation and render the necessary assistance. Mossel Bay Advertiser will keep you updated as the situation unfolds.
The small yacht, Panacea, was detained by the MRCC at the Cape Town harbour, as it was not deemed seaworthy.
The owner ignored all instructions to not leave the Cape Town harbour and sailed on Friday, 12 August for Mossel Bay.
The trip normally takes between 3 to 5 days and was reported overdue yesterday. The two cold fronts experienced added to concerns.
The MRCC sent out Pan Pan broadcasts signals since yesterday to try and locate the vessel.
