MOSSEL BAY NEWS - In the spirit of creating opportunities locally for youth development and training, Group Editors, publishers of the Mossel Bay Advertiser, along with other publications in the stable, Suid-Kaap Forum, George Herald and Knysna Plett Herald, are presenting a student internship programme this year.
In February, four students were appointed to do an internship in journalism.
In Mossel Bay, locals might be familiar with the youthful face of Kaylin Reynolds.
A local through and through, she was born and raised in Mossel Bay, attending Milkwood Primary School and Point High School.
Currently studying for a BA through the University of South Africa (UNISA), her major subjects are English and history.
"Coming from a family of teachers, several of whom teach English and history, I suppose it was my destiny," Kaylin says.
She confesses to always having had a keen interest in news and current affairs. "For as long as I can remember, every morning before we got ready for school my family watched the news. While other children were watching cartoons as they ate their cereal, I was learning about the recession, commodity prices and the news of the day."
To her, the internship was therefore an opportunity not to be missed.
"Like many final year students, I am considering my post-graduate options and this internship is the perfect way for me to obtain experience in journalism, a field I have been interested in for quite a few years."
She hopes to offer the community a fresh perspective on news. "As a member of Gen Z, people born from 1997 to 2015, I believe it is important that newspapers cover issues important to young people, because we are the largest age demographic in the country. I also hope to learn more about the town I have lived in my whole life, but definitely don't know everything about."
Kaylin believes community journalism is at the frontline of covering local news.
"Often community newspapers break stories of high profile cases before they get picked up by larger news outlets. We are also able to set the tone on issues that matter to our communities and tell them exactly how issues that play out on the national stage affect them at home."
