MOSSEL BAY NEWS - On Tuesday, February 22, the Mossel Bay executive mayor and members of the Mayoral Committee undertook the first of their weekly Management by Walkabout visits and reviewed recent events in Great Brak River.
Deputy executive mayor, Councillor Cliffie Bayman, highlighted both the positives and negatives.
The visit included the area where some residents had to evacuate their homes due to a landslide and also to the premises where two young people were recently injured when a cement slab gave way. Mayor Dirk Kotzé also visited and supported the children's parents.
The councillors paid an unexpected visit to the Great Brak River municipal offices where, among other things, the staff of Debtpack have discussed the challenges they are experiencing with the administration of indigent benefits.
The satellite office of the Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services was also visited where, among other things, information was exchanged about the municipality's project to install smoke sensors in informal homes.
Alderman Kotzé said: "Mossel Bay Municipality and specifically the Mayoral Committee strives to make a tangible difference in the lives of our community. This visit, the first of many to be made across the municipal area, has emphasised the importance of experiencing first-hand the living conditions of residents before making decisions that may affect them in the council chamber.
"I thank the community members. They spoke to us frankly and shared their experiences and challenges. Thank you also to the members of the Mayoral Committee who reaffirmed their community spirit.
"My team and I will embark on more of these visits on Tuesdays so that every executive councillor is thoroughly informed of the many challenges and opportunities in our beautiful town," Kotzé said after the visit.
