MOSSEL BAY NEWS - As part of the Matriekbaai activities in Mossel Bay, trees will be planted at Sonskynvallei on Thursday, 8 December.
Matriekbaai is a type of matric "rave" taking place in Mossel Bay until 10 December, centred mainly at Dias Beach, comprising entertainment by singers and various functions and afterparties.
It is open to 18 to 22 year olds.
The tree planting takes place at 12:00 at Sonskynvallei, on the R328 road on the way to Oudtshoorn. A group of matrics will be present for the planting.
Matriekbaai organisers are collaborating with the municipality in the tree planting. Mossel Bay Municipality has a tree planting campaign running currently.
Ten trees will be planted at Sonskynvallei and the rest of a total of 2 000 trees contributed by the Matriekbaai organisers, will be planted elsewhere in the greater Mossel Bay area as a "legacy of the Matriekbaai", Mossel Bay Municipality community services director Elize Nel says.
On Sunday evening Mossel Bay executive mayor Dirk Kotzé visited the Matriekbaai venue at Dias Beach to thank those involved in safety and security there for their contribution.
Kotzé noted on his Facebook page that he and his wife Riëtte stopped off to greet and thank the Public Order Policing officers, who were "working through the night to ensure that visitors to our town are kept safe while they enjoy Matriekbaai, as well as to ensure that residents of our town continue to enjoy high quality community safety".
He noted that the Da Gamaskop Community Policing Forum and Sector 2 neighbourhood watches - Dias, Island View, Hartenbos, Seemeupark, Bay View and Hartenbos Heuwels - were also playing "an active role in ensuring that the visitors enjoying Matriekbaai are kept safe as they move around our iconic town".
Kotzé said: "Thank you for the incredibly important work you do."
