MOSSEL BAY NEWS - "One of my defence mechanisms I use is to help needy people. That smile changes how I feel about myself and makes me positive about the unending challenges and social ills the disadvantaged people encounter," says Nomboniso Jika, manager of the Thusong Centre in Mossel Bay.
Therefore, she believes "Mandela Day should be every day".
Jika says helping people is not about having millions, it is about creating platforms of engagements with people who have the same vision as self and use available resources to change lives.
An elderly person's life was changed through these platforms, where people met to build makhulu a decent home to stay. She is 81 years old and residing with her blind daughter and a Grade 7 learner. Her home keys were handed over on 15 August.
Jika said: "I am grateful to all my support structures, my husband George Jika, family, friends, business partners and the community at large.
"I would like to thank Mr Geofrey van Rhyn of JFH Holding for ensuring the house was built within three weeks of seeing the need on facebook. He committed himself and his team to put a smile on someone's face and change the life of makhulu Lhelhe, residing in Queens Street, KwaNonqaba. We all have a responsibility to change lives for the better."
