MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Those who have large, spacious homes and gardens and are reliant on house cleaning services, domestic workers and gardeners, may be taking strain during the lockdown.
A man was fined by police during the lockdown for fetching his domestic worker and gardener in Asla Park. The police spotted him contravening the law and took action.
A stern warning was issued by Leon van Dyk, the chairman of the Mossel Bay Police Station Community Policing Forum, about this.
When contacted by the Mossel Bay Advertiser, Van Dyk said he suspected this was not the only incident of people fetching their domestic workers or gardeners.
Van Dyk said this was against the law and it was defeating the objective of the lockdown, which was called to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus and Covid-19. "People are making too many exceptions to the rules.
Van Dyk urged citizens to stay at home. When interviewed by the Advertiser, he said: "Although I am part of essential services during the lockdown and am allowed to leave the house, I have only done so once since the lockdown started."
He also stressed that food distribution to the poor - the fetching and dropping off of parcels - should be controlled and undertaken under conditions of strict sanitation and social distancing and in co-operation with law enforcement authorities.
There should be as little driving around as possible during the lockdown, Van Dyk said.
