The programme, which started at the beginning of 2012, is an initiative to give Grade 8 learners a sound footing in literacy and numeracy, by providing extra tuition in mathematics, by Mrs Katie Müller, and English by Dr Carol van Zijl every day after school. Nestlé also provides these learners with a nutritious lunch.
There is close cooperation between their normal school tuition and the Nestlé programme, so that the learners can enjoy the maximum benefit from the extra lessons. On Friday, Indwe School organised an event to celebrate the success of the best and most improved learners in Mathematics and English during 2013. The winners for English were Ayabukwa Mbokotho, Andisiwe Fundakubi, Sikelelwa Plaatjie, Lihle Tyesi, Spokazi Gcotyana, Nosiphosethu Jantjies, Athenkosi Qole, Asisipho Xingashe, Wongama Solani and Amanda Malusi. The most successful learners in Mathematics are Ayabukwa Mbokotho, Esona Dyokolo, Siphokuhle Maskiti, Sikelelwa Plaatjie, Bukhosi Fanteni, Princess Tsalau, Nelisa Mnganisa, Abongile Matyedi, Chwayita Govu and Ayabonga Dyantyi.
In addition, the five runners-up in each of the five groups were given smaller tokens of appreciation for their diligent work.
Mmes Müller and van Zijl addressed the learners and thanked Nestlé for their foresight in creating this special programme. They expressed the hope that the Grade 8s who had benefited from the extra tuition, would now build on the foundation they have been given to realise their potential.
The Grade 8 learners were encouraged to run with the rugby ball that had been thrown to them and achieve the goal they have set for themselves and were told that it was never too late to start taking their education seriously. The tutors thanked the headmaster, Mr Nqoba, for his support and to the Grade 8 Maths and English teachers, Mmes Dubula and Piti, for their ongoing help with the programme.
The programme is proving to be very successful, because after a year's tuition, learners are more comfortable in the use of the English language, which is the medium of instruction at Indwe. In addition, their grasp of Mathematics has improved dramatically.
The school provided snacks for all the Grade 8s at the school to round off this event.

Indwe Secondary School's Gr 8s had a taste of hard work paying off. Here they are with their tokens of appreciation from Nestlé for participating in the 'Welcome to high school' special tuition programme. With them is Katie Muller, who facilitated the Maths tuition.
