MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay Provincial Hospital thanks the Garden Route Community Casino Trust as well as the Mossel Bay Hospital Board for the donation of a tonometer at a cost of R84 000.
Michael Karelse and the Garden Route Community Trust team contributed R65 000 to this cause and the difference was paid for by the hospital board.
The need for this additional tonometer as a diagnostic tool will greatly assist the eye specialty nurse, who works on an outreach programme, visiting facilities to consult to nearly 450 people with eye problems per month.
The tonometer is used to do ocular tonometry, which is a test to measure the pressure in an eye to screen for glaucoma and to measure how well glaucoma treatment is working.
This is mostly a prevention programme because when glaucoma is diagnosed early it can be treated with eye drops, thus ensuring that clients are still able to work.
The Mossel Bay sub-district of the Health Department would like another two tonometers. Any contributions or donations are welcome.
