MOSSEL BAY NEWS - International Coastal Clean-up Day is on 15 September and this year Mossel Bay residents will have the opportunity to participate in the very first audited clean-up for the region.
All the conservancies, Tourism, Oceans Research, various businesses and other organisations such as Round Table will clean beaches from Gouritz to Wilderness.
The S.M.A.R.T. (Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team) will collect all the trash data forms and add them all to a coordinator form which will be sent to Plastics SA, which will send the collected data to Oceans Conservancy in Florida, USA.
The Mossel Bay Municipality will place bins at various collection points. There will even be an underwater clean-up operation.
Help to make a difference. Internationally in 2017, the following were found: four guitars, 940 170 plastic beverage bottles, 1 685 422 food wrappers and 40 toilets.
The combined weight of trash internationally was equal to 812 cruise ship anchors and there were enough plastic bags collected to sew 5 461 sails.
The "tiny trash" makes a big impact and 1 933 146 microplastic pieces and 459 249 pieces of glass were collected.
In South Africa 18 032 people participated and collected 12 694kg of trash from beaches.
This year there is a much bigger campaign and that is why everybody is invited to take part in this massive operation. Contact your local conservancy or phone S.M.A.R.T. (072 227 4715) for more information.
