MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Da Gamaskop police are investigating a case of assault following an incident at a local primary school, where an educator allegedly punished a nine-year-old girl.
The incident took place at the school in Extension 23 in August, when the educator, a 57-year-old retired woman from George who according to information acted as a substitute teacher at the school, allegedly hit the learner on the palm of her hand with a ruler, causing an injury, necessitating medical attention.
The Western Cape Education Department confirmed the incident upon enquiry this week.
"The educator resigned before disciplinary steps had been instituted.
"The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will report the matter to the South African Council for Educators (SACE)," said Millicent Merton of the Directorate of Communication, WCED.
Captain Wollie Fourie, the Da Gamaskop police spokesperson, confirmed that the case had been referred to the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court.
The case will be heard on 25 September. Warrant officer Arleen Stokes from the De Gamaskop detectives is the investigating officer.
• The WCED also confirmed, upon enquiry, that a senior educator at a high school in D'Almeida had been charged with fraud and financial mismanagement.
The disciplinary hearing is in progress, according to Merton.
