MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Do you have items at home you don't need? Here is a useful way of getting rid of unwanted "stuff" - and for a worthy cause.
The Alzheimer's SA Southern Cape branch is holding a fundraising lunch and auction and would be extremely grateful to receive your unneeded items.
The fun event will take place at the Ochre Venue at the Café Gannet Restaurant in Mossel Bay at 12:00 on Saturday, 26 May. But if you are unable to attend, you can still donate your "stuff" beforehand.
There are about 47 million people living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias worldwide, according to My Brain, an awareness movement of the Alzheimer's Association in the United States.
Two thirds are women
About two thirds of these sufferers are women. In her 60s, a woman's estimated lifetime risk for developing Alzheimer's is 1 in 6. For breast cancer it is 1 in 11, so Alzheimer's is far more common.
For this reason, much work is needed to help prevent this epidemic, draining countries' workforces and economies. Most carers of Alzheimer's sufferers are women, they are often unpaid and often had to give up their jobs to look after family members.
Tickets for the lunch cost R170. A portion of this goes to Alzheimer's SA.
The Alzheimer's SA Southern Cape volunteers train carers at frail care homes, they offer counselling in the home and over the telephone, they give advice on caring for patients and they organise talks on Alzheimer's to educate friends and family of sufferers.
They require funds to pay for their petrol and telephone costs and the printing of their training manuals.
Items you can bring to be auctioned:
- That mountain bike you no longer need because you bought a better one.
- Perhaps you downsized and don't have space for your paintings or Persian rugs.
- Jewellery that no longer has sentimental value.
- Do you have a collection of vintage or other cars? Why not auction one? Bring it to the parking lot at the Ochre Venue at Café Gannet for everyone to view.
- A spare motorcycle you no longer ride.
- Fancy kitchen or home gizmos that others will enjoy.
Vredebest Auctioneers in Mossel Bay have kindly agreed to do the auction for free. Please try to bring items that will command a high price. All items must be in good working order and attractive for potential bidders. Expect some surprises on the day, because you may wish to bid on an "experience" you will enjoy.
Competition with friends
Why not organise a group of friends to attend and have a delicious Gannet lunch and some fun competition with your friends as you try to outbid one another? The Gannet has kindly offered its Ochre Venue for free because the event is for charity.
If you don't wish to bid and would simply enjoy the lunch, you are still welcome - but you must bring something people can bid on. That gets you in the door.
To book your place, contact the Alzheimer's SA Southern Cape branch manager Hettie Theron (082 699 7600 or 044 877 0417). Please RSVP by Friday, 18 May. It is essential to RSVP.
Money for lunch tickets (R170 each) should be deposited into the account: Alzheimer's SA, Absa bank, 925 609 5672, Branch 632 005. Use name and surname as reference and email proof of payment to managersc@alzheimers.org.za.
If you cannot attend but would like to support Alzheimer's SA you are welcome to make a donation. When you email proof of payment, please provide your contact details.
