LITTLE BRAK RIVER NEWS - Work has started on the upgrade of Beyers Street in Little Brak River.
Mossel Bay Municipality has responded to concerns raised about the integrity of the dunes and coastal conservation along Beyers Street and the resultant need for continued maintenance associated with sand clearing, the deterioration of the road surface and complaints about the unregulated parking and traffic congestion along Beyers Street, especially over the peak holiday periods.
One of the most prominent new features will be a pedestrian boardwalk south of Beyers Street that will provide safe pedestrian access to the beach without eroding the sensitive dunes, which in turn will be rehabilitated.
The boardwalk will help regulate informal crossings over the sensitive dune area by providing specific access points from the boardwalk on to the dunes.
The upgrade and reseal of Beyers Street with new parking along the northern edge of Beyers Street and within Lint Street will be complemented by a dedicated pedestrian boardwalk south of Beyers Street.
The municipal road reserve along the northern boundary of Beyers Street, outside the 15-foot setback, will be levelled and level grass blocks will be established to allow parking space.
The municipality will in future maintain this area.
For this purpose, work to demarcate the Beyers Street public road servitude to distinguish between private land and the municipal property has started.
The municipality appointed Cape EAPrac to ensure that the work complies with environmental guidelines and that a proper public participation process was followed and that all interested and affected parties were given the opportunity to comment on the proposals.
