MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Despite the annual Buffalo Rally attracting large crowds, local artists who strutted their stuff at the Mossel Bay Creative Culture Association's (MOCCA) Open Mic event at the Monroe Theatre, performed to a full house on Friday night.
The Open Mic events began in late 2017. The event on Friday, 16 March was the third one.
The line-up included comedy cabaret, spoken word and some of Mossel Bay's finest rap artists from KwaNonqaba under the baton of Andile Citashe and Sinethemba Sobusa.
The artists included MystiqFlow, HurricaneBlaq, Walter Blac, Gavin Gates, Arson & Keyzo, KingBars, Ego and Jolene the Poet.
The women had the strongest representation with the youthful Dihandri, Sanya Paschel - a fresh breeze from Great Brak, seasoned performer Karin Julies and cabaret diva Petronel Baard.
Jolene Witbooi impressed during her spoken word collaboration with Karin Julies. Ronell Maree brought a truly unusual act to the stage with her poetry, performed also in sign language.
The evening also delivered, in true open mic style, a few impromptu performances including a honky-tonk piano performance and real vintage Afrikaans poetry being recited.
The next Open Mic event will be in April in Great Brak and then an event in KwaNonqaba will follow.
"These events are organised so we can connect and share and educate. The floor is also open to discuss any cultural matters at hand. If you do not come, we do not know you, so hop on board when you can. We love good vibes. Everyone is welcome to use this platform," says MOCCA chairperson Petronel Baard.
The rap song, Repossession, performed passionately.
