MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Sport in Mossel Bay has received a substantial boost. Not only was Mossel Bay the proud host of the National Kickboxing Championships over the weekend of 14 May, but both Great Brak River and Hartenbos have new netball courts.
A new soccer field will also be officially opened in Green Haven, Great Brak River, later this week.
On Monday, 16 May, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, officially opened the new netball courts in Hartenbos.
The courts will be open to the community, including residents of nearby Sonskynvallei.
Marais opened the new netball court as part of the build-up to the 2023 Netball World Cup.
She then handed over ceremonial cheques to the affiliated Eden sport federations, as well as equipment to clubs as part of the Club Development Programme in Mossel Bay.
This support will help the federations with their administration, development, capacity-building and funding, as well as with major events to enable them to fulfil their significant mandate of developing and promoting their respective codes and clubs in the Western Cape.
Director of Community Services at the Mossel Bay municipality, Elize Nel, says this is a step in the right direction.
"Sport makes a difference in people's lives," she says.
Great Brak River Secondary School principal, Desmond Speelman, says it is problematic that some learners and the youth in Mossel Bay are not more involved in sport.
"They now have no reason to not participate because we have created the facilities for them and we will continue to create more."
