MOSSEL BAY NEWS - If you see a human-sized blue light bulb in Mossel Bay during April, your eyes are definitely not deceiving you.
Should you come across this phenomenon, you would have had the privilege of meeting Blu, the autism friendly mascot spreading awareness of autism spectrum, April being Autism Awareness Month, recognised worldwide.
The Education and Training Hub for Autism Spectrum (ETHAN) has taken it upon itself to create greater understanding and awareness of autism in Mossel Bay.
Among some of the projects this month, it has hosted workshops for staff working in retail at the Langeberg Mall and Blu has also been doing his rounds at local schools to rally for autism awareness.
On Monday, 16 April BLU and a friend visited Erica Primary School, where they facilitated the I'm Autism Friendly Training. Blu kept the learners at Erika mesmerised with a talk about Autism and how to be a friend to someone who is different.
Blu's key messages were that it is okay to be different and that people with autism simply have brains that are wired differently, that it is never okay to be a bully to someone who is different and also that all people are fearfully and wonderfully made with a unique plan and purpose in the world.
World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated on 2 April and blue is recognised as the official colour for autism awareness.
