BUSINESS NEWS - "Can you drive a modern 4×4 for 24 hours non-stop on a sandy off-road track? There was only one way to find out." – Reuben van Niekerk, Leisure Wheels, issue no 185, September 2019.
This issue of Leisure Wheels offers readers an exhilarating insight into what it’s like to drive for 24 hours with the new Land Rover Discovery in the sand to set a new world record.
TopUp with the Best
TopUp was the proud fuel sponsor for this endeavour – and it was indeed as exciting as it sounds.
Taking place in Vleesbaai, which is just a short drive away from our Mossel Bay station, this 4×4 trail offered an exciting blend of sandy hills, flats and raised curves.
With a 400 litre bowser filled to capacity with 50ppm fuel, we pitched our gazebo, sat back and enjoyed the action for the 24 hours, pumping premium fuel as needed.

The Challenge
What is the furthest possible distance driven off-road in 24 hours? Seeing there’s no concrete definition for the term off-road, the Leisure Wheels team chose a sandy track because … well, they wanted to make it even more of a challenge.
According to the article, there were a couple of things to prove with the Land Rover Discovery, namely:
- How far could they drive on the sandy 4×4 track in 24 hours?
- Would it be possible in a stock standard, no glitz and glamour Land Rover Discovery?
Why the Discovery?
For a previous issue of the publication, the Leisure Wheels team took 4×4 reps on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Mozambique, where the Land Rover Discovery stood out in terms of comfort and performance. On the other hand, it faces a lot of scrutiny for "not being a real 4×4".
So, when it came to thinking about breaking a world record, they had only one vehicle in mind.
