BUSINESS NEWS - Mossel Bay residents develop Mathematical breakthrough program Ian Fihla (deputy principal of Garden Route) “Every learner deserves TOWERMATHS.”
Professor Koop Lubbinge grew up in Holland during the Second World War He immigrated to South Africa in 1952. On retirement he moved to Mossel Bay and he decided to solve problems of counting, addition and subtraction. After a successful career in technology, engineering, science, business and academics he started to develop a program to solve the problem of teaching mathematics. After 12 years TOWERMATHS was ready to be introduced.
These are the problems that he identified:
Most people are not even shy to say that they are afraid of mathematics. The problem starts at Foundation Phase. The fear of mathematics starts when kids are introduced to it for the first time.
We only recently discovered the reason for this when we were able to study the brain with brain scans. The way that mathematics is currently presented is not brain friendly.
TOWERMATHS solves this problem.
The curriculum was developed, from the first principles, to be brain friendly. It has been tested on children constantly to evaluate their response. They reacted with eagerness, because they enjoyed it and wanted to do it over and over again. Koop met Heloise van der Merwe, and with her credibility in the educational system they were able to start a pilot program at Ruiterbos and Isilatisho schools.
The results were promising and as a result the department of education gave their permission to implement the program in three schools.

Sanlam and African Rainbow Capital jointly financed TOWERMATHS for a 3 year project at Hartenbos Primary, Isalathiso, and Garden Route for Grade R and Grade 1 learners. The results were incredible, and the parents of the learners asked to join the TOWERMATHS private tutor program for extra support.
Private lessons are given by tutors who are licensed by TOWERMATHS INTERNATIONAL to do so. They start their own business and present the TOWERMATHS curriculum to learners in small groups of no more than 6 in a group.
Because of a large demand, we started training the teachers to become private tutors. The learners in their classes can now get private support from them after hours. This is a Mossel Bay initiative conducted by Mossel Bay schools, teachers, parents, and learners.
Recently we licensed TOWERMATHS UNITED KINGDOM. They will be bringing the TOWERMATHS program to England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Our program focuses on foundation phase learners aged between 4 and 9.
