This well-situated venue, in the heart of Mossel Bay, has in the past year attracted many local residents a
nd tourists to its group exhibitions, as well as young people who flock to its Drumming Thursdays, and other special evening events.
The success of these ventures inspired team Fringe to expand the cultural activities. A well-equipped pottery studio was introduced where classes are given by the sculptor Adrian Hofmeyr. Presently, two floors of the centre are upgraded to house the newly established Artbeat Gallery.
Celebrations start on 21 October with the gallery's first solo exhibition of paintings and digital graphic Giclée prints by Elsa Lamb, who moved here from Pretoria. On Sunday, 28 October at 11:00, the artist will give a special walkabout at the gallery for interested patrons.
In the future, artists from elsewhere will also be able to make reservations for solo exhibitions on the ground or top floor to exhibit their paintings, sculpture, pottery, photography or installations. In between solo exhibitions, the Artbeat Gallery will continue to host group exhibitions of work by local artists only.
The main purpose of The Fringe's founders is to establish a lively cultural centre in Mossel Bay that serves the visual, as well as the word and performing arts.
During 2013, the centre will host a variety of workshops, critical art evaluation discussions, art classes and competitions for local schools.
Any qualified person interested to help with these activities is welcome to contact the centre's manager, Charlene Eloff. The centre is also planning a Winter School by inviting professional artists and lecturers during the school holidays to give master classes on specific topics and techniques to local and visiting artists.
The Fringe Art Centre's attractive historical sand stone building has also become a popular venue for poetry readings and small private parties. Soon a shady pergola would be erected in the secluded court yard where patrons and their friends could come and relax with the beverages served. Reservations for private celebrations in the court yard (werf) or the gallery's basement must be made well in advance.
The Fringe Art Centre and Artbeat Gallery, are cultural assets to our town where everyone, young or retired, are welcome. The founders wish to thank the artists and Mossel Bay community for their support during the past year, as well as the many individuals who gave of their time and ideas, or donated equipment.
