MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Wings for Life World Run took place on Mother's Day, 8 May, connecting all runners virtually through an advanced running application.
Two locals from Mossel Bay, Alta Zeelie and Tracy van Niekerk, participated in the run.
"Our team for South Africa is the Red Bull team, with 437 members and still growing. People all over the world started yesterday at 13:00, with so much fun," said Zeelie and Van Niekerk dedicated the run to Ronel Potgieter, who after a motor vehicle accident, was paralysed.
She lost her husband in the crash and still runs a full household with only 75% use of her body.
They also dedicated the run to Tertius Strauss, diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). He can only sit for short intervals in a chair and spends the rest of his time bedridden.
"The purpose is to raise money for people in wheelchairs and with spinal cord injuries." Zeelie said it was an awesome run on Sunday and that Wings for Life worldwide are much more than one can imagine.
"While running you get entertained and listen to testimonials of those who cannot run. This brings you joy, happiness and thankfulness to be blessed with health."
The run is a global charity event with a unique and fun format, where the virtual finish line chases you. In aid of the Wings for Life Foundation, 100% of the full entry fee goes to the foundation, whose goal is to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.
The goal for next year is to see more participants in the George and Mossel Bay area. Zeelie says the entries for next year are already open and they are planning to start their own Western Cape team.
Alta Zeelie and Tracey van Niekerk were in a joyful mood during the Wings For Life World Run.
