MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay's Joy Goulooze, who was one of three people nationwide nominated for the SA Sport Volunteer of the Year Award, did not win the award.
It was won by Zizo Popu of East London for her contribution to handball.
However, Goulooze said the experience of attending the awards at Sun City on Saturday, 25 March, was truly unforgettable. She was nominated for her contribution to lifesaving.
Rehearsals for the awards took place on Saturday.
There was no second and third place mentioned in the awards. Marissa Potgieter (para-sport) was the other nominee in the Volunteer of the Year category.
Goulooze said: "They really spoilt us. We were treated like stars."
The nominees even had a red carpet moment. "A limousine came and fetched you and dropped you at the Sun City Super Bowl. The TV cameras were on you," Joy said.
Goulooze left for the awards on Friday and returned on Sunday. Shuttles took her to and from George Airport and Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
She was the winner in the category, Volunteer of the Year at the Western Cape Government Provincial Sport Awards held on 17 September last year in Cape Town.
Joy is secretary of Eden Lifesaving and has spent many years facilitating swimming coaching for children, through to preparing them for nipper and lifesaving competitions.
