MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Triathle is a new development initiative by UIPM, in which athletes compete in three different events as part of a single race: shooting, swimming and running.
Triathle made its debut on the international stage at the Biathle Triathle World Championships 2013 and is derived from Modern Pentathlon.
All three events of the competition take place on the beach. The first is the shooting leg. The shooting range is a few metres away for the starting point, and athletes race towards it to pick up their guns and start shooting.
Laser guns with sensitive targets are used for this leg. Competitors have to register at least five shots at the target to complete the shooting leg.
The next is the swimming leg which consists of swimming in the sea on a course closer to the beach.
Athletes swim around buoys. The end of the swimming leg leads the athletes on to the running course which is the final leg of the race. The running event takes place on deep sand. The total running distance of the course is 320 metres, and is designed with several turns.
Triathle races are conducted for both men and women of different age groups.
Johan Windt (defending world champion in Master C category) and Zhané Vorster (junior woman) qualified for the world championships in Egypt from 25 to 28 October together with Marcus Kleynshans from George.
Biathle, triathle, laserrun and tetrathlon are all part of modern pentathlon. For more information visit www.edenmpa.co.za or contact Johan Windt (083 461 5096 or johanwindt53@gmail.com).
