NATIONAL NEWS - The Mangaung Metro Municipality has announced plans to improve the maintenance and safety of cemeteries following the tragic death of Langalethu Magoda, a Grade 3 learner from Eunice Primary School.
Bloemfontein Courant reports Langalethu recently died after a tombstone fell on her at South Park Cemetery in Bloemfontein.
The municipality has since acknowledged the urgent need to address safety concerns at local cemeteries.
In an interview with the newspaper, City manager Sello More outlined efforts to improve cemetery upkeep and prevent future accidents.
“We have started initiatives to clean and restore dignity to our graveyards. This includes mobilising teams through the Expanded Public Works Programme and the Presidential Employment Programme to maintain these spaces,” More said.
He revealed the launch of ‘Project Dignity’, aimed at enhancing security and general upkeep at cemeteries.
“In African terms, these are not just graves; they are homes to our ancestors, and we must take care of them. Part of the project includes introducing 24/7 monitored security using artificial intelligence, installing cameras, and having on-site personnel,” he explained.
More noted that theft of fencing and other infrastructure has compromised cemetery safety by creating opportunities for unlawful entry. “People who steal fencing from graveyards compromise security. We are also planning educational and awareness programmes to discourage such activities,” he added.
Acknowledging the financial burden of maintenance, More emphasised the municipality’s commitment to taking responsibility for cemeteries.
“Each grave is part of a collective space, and the municipality must maintain it. We are also working to automate cemetery records, allowing families to locate graves more efficiently,” he said.
While extending condolences to Langalethu’s family, More stated that the incident serves as a wake-up call for the city.
“Our deepest sympathies go to the family. This tragedy has highlighted the need for strengthened safety measures, and we are committed to doing more to ensure that cemeteries remain dignified and safe for all,” he concluded.
An inquest into the accident is ongoing, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding the tombstone’s collapse.
