MOSSEL BAY NEWS - "I will hold my breath in order for little Baby Layla to be able to breathe," says muscleman Lukas Korff quite humbly.
Korff will pit himself against the cumulative weight of three metres of water and a 50kg barbell in an attempt to break a world record of the most underwater bench presses while without a wetsuit and unassisted by any oxygen apparatus.
By doing so, he will raise funds to assist an infant known only as Baby Layla, who suffers from cystic fibrosis and is in dire need of funding to enable her to have a better quality life.
Korff and his family recently settled in Mossel Bay and have since become quite active with various adrenaline-driven projects that primarily focus on the youth and youth development. He works closely with companies that facilitate leadership programmes and projects. In this respect, he says, locals will soon get to know him and the work he does much better.
Unaided by oxygen or a wetsuit, Lukas Korff will attempt a world record, benchpressing a 50kg barbell while under three metres of water at the Diaz Water Park.
Youth Day event
For the moment, though, his focus is on the Youth Day event planned for 12:00 on June 16 at the Diaz Water Park, where he will do his utmost to break the world record and raise funds for the little baby that means so much to him.
A small entrance fee will be charged to raise funds for Baby Layla, yet, after the world record attempt, spectators will be able to enjoy all the Diaz Water Park has to offer free of charge until at least 16:00.
"My first wife died as a result of cystic fibrosis. I am passionate about this fundraiser and call on all of Mossel Bay's young people to attend and to support this little baby in her quest to breath with greater ease.
"I will go underwater, unassisted by any oxygen, and lift the barbell as many times as I can. This is symbolic of the battle that cystic fibrosis sufferers have with breathing. Every breath is a battle.
Little Baby Layla has to be continuously monitored to ensure that she stays free of infections, which are a real danger to the little girl.
The event is made possible by various sponsors, and Korff adds that he is extremely grateful for their continued support.
