MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Provincial secretary of the Disabled People of South Africa (DPSA), Taswell Williams, recently hosted a workshop locally to discuss the White Paper on the rights of persons with disabilities.
One of the main focus points was the strengthening of the representative voice of persons with disabilities.
Williams said that often, the ability to make decisions that affect one's standard of living, is an unknown concept for people living with disabilities. Self-representation is crucial to ensure an adequate standard of living. During the workshop, this issue was thoroughly addressed.
There were also talks on consultation and the active involvement of persons with disabilities, including children in the development and implementation of policies concerning disability.
Patrick Saayman, the provincial vice chairman, development, for the DPSA, led the local group. Yamako Mpala, DPSA programme manager for the Western Cape, was also at the workshop.
