MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Young women in Mossel Bay are making waves in more than just a literal way, by participating in an empowerment project.
The Oceans Research Foundation, in collaboration with Isuzu South Africa, is currently presenting a marine woman empowerment project.
It aims to provide employability skills and leadership development to 60 young women in Mossel Bay.
The most recent training involved a Marine Mammal Stranding Course.
"We also invited Ilma Smocilac, a retired swimming coach from Franky Frogs, to teach the basic principals of swimming, as many of these women have never learned to swim.
"After only an hour, the majority were able to float and a few managed to do strokes in the water. They were absolutely terrified to even be in the water when training began, but we practically had to drag them out of the water after training," says Sophumelela Qoma, a facilitator for the Oceans Research Fondation.
"We were so thrilled and confident we are well on our way to creating strong marine ambassadors."
Still in the pipeline is collaboration with the Mossel Bay Sailing Club. The first group of 30 girls have also completed the first aid course.
