MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Soon the tourism potential of the Mossel Bay central business district (CBD) will systematically be unlocked to portray the rich fibre of history, art and belonging that characterises and sets apart the old town.
With a multidisciplinary project team at the helm and with the expert help of renowned author Riana Scheepers and local historian and chair of the Mossel Bay Heritage Society Carina Wiggell to assist, the project is taking shape.
This week the project team briefed the municipal manager, Adv Thys Giliomee and the executive municipal management of their proposals, which were well received.
At the heart of the proposal is a plan to link tourists and tourism-related activities in the historic Mossel Bay CBD to tell and showcase the history or "story" of Mossel Bay and its people.
With popular QR-codes providing the relevant information on tourist attractions, an additional bonus will be the information on related tourist activities, businesses, restaurants and coffee shops available at the press of a slim phone button.
With many of the historic buildings in the heritage precinct still largely intact, Mossel Bay offers tourists the ideal glimpse into yesteryear.
With the town's heritage buildings properly maintained and managed, the entire CBD could become a prime tourist destination.
The initiative will not serve tourists only.
Improved road infrastructure at key intersections and pedestrian rest stations along the tourist route will be key features of the redevelopment.
The rest stations will connect the focal points and become the stage for urban art.
Harry Giddey Park
Popular Harry Giddey Park is likely to have a face change to become more user-friendly and to cater for organised arts and crafts.
Due to cost constraints, the tourist route will be implemented in a phased approach with the possibility of business buy-in to help fund the multi-year project.
Various routes will connect to offer tourists an experience of the rich heritage Mossel Bay can boast about.
The multi-disciplinary group responsible for the implementation of a tourism focus in the CBD this week discussed proposals with the Municipal Manager, Adv Thys Giliomee (right) and the municipal executive management.
