Based in Friemersheim, a rural community outside Great Brak Rivier, The Surfer Kids NON-Profit Programme works with children of the local primary school, with the aim of enriching their understanding through surfing and travelling, giving them new experiences.
A regular group of 15 children from Friemersheim Primary School go surfing with The Surfer Kids NON-Profit every weekend and, on special occasions, they will go on trips and excursions to new places.
Over the past three years, The Surfer Kids have rarely missed a weekend of surfing at Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay and they have become a regular sight there. They have also travelled to many exciting places, such as Chintsa, East London, Cape Town, Buffels Bay and Port Elizabeth. In Cape Town, The Surfer Kids visited the V&A Waterfront and the Two Oceans Aquarium. They also climbed Table Mountain.
The Surfer Kids Programme was founded by Unravel Surf Travel OUTREACH, which currently provides their primary support structure. Unravel Surf Travel is a business based outside Great Brak Rivier. It offers surf-yoga-photo tours of the Garden Route to an international clientele and one of their founding principles is to support The Surfer Kids NON-Profit. Eventually, however, the aim is for The Surfer Kids to become independent, so that they can operate on their own.
Over the last three years, Unravel Surf Travel has also established an important OUTREACH link between their Garden Route tours and The Surfer Kids Programme. Through this link, the children in the NON-Profit programme are incorporated into every two-week tour of the Garden Route for an exciting two days of surfing and travelling with international travellers. This gives The Surfer Kids valuable experience and serves to generate donations for the NON-Profit Programme from generous travellers on tour with Unravel Surf Travel.
The Surfer Kids NON-Profit has also been supported by many individuals in Mossel Bay and all over the Garden Route, who have generously offered their time and resources to help this programme. Many local surfers have donated surfboards and wetsuits.
The Surfer Kids are also supported by Surfing South Africa and through a recent donation, organised by the governing body of Surfing in South Africa, The Surfer Kids received a home built surf-trailer. This is a great way of celebrating their third anniversary, as, for the past three years, The Surfer Kids have been borrowing their transport, primarily from Unravel Surf Travel.
Having their own trailer brings them one step closer to independence, However, the donated surf-trailer needs some maintenance in order to be put through a road worthy test and The Surfer Kids NON-Profit would appreciate any help with getting their own surf-trailer on the road. Please contact the program's co-founder, Hermann, at hermann@unravelsurftravel.com or 084 893 1543.
