MOSSEL BAY NEWS - South Africa's Council for Geoscience (CGS) confirmed that an earthquake and an aftershock occurred on Sunday morning, 22 December, at around 02:51 and 05:28, respectively.
According to a statement by the CGS the preliminary results show that the earthquake and aftershock registered local magnitudes of approximately 5.3 and 2.9 respectively, as recorded by the South African Seismograph Network (SANSN).
"The epicentres were located within 20km, southwest of Buchufontein in the Northern Cape. There are reports of aftershocks that have been felt in other parts of the country which are currently being analysed," said the CGS.

The CGS is the custodian of the SANSN, which monitors seismic wave activities throughout the country.
