MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - An open piece of land alongside the NG Suidgemeente church in central Mossel Bay is to be developed into a townhouse complex if homeowners alongside the land achieve their desire.

For many years there have been problems with vagrants making fires on the erf at night, littering and also taking rubbish bags, put out by homeowners, to the erf and rummaging through them, leaving a mess.

A resident, Jody Klue, who lives in an upmarket townhouse complex alongside the land, says people use the area around an electrical substation as a toilet.

Klue said up to 60 people had complained about the problems with the erf, which is on 17th Avenue. He told the Mossel Bay Advertiser that residents had recommended an upmarket housing complex be built on the land, similar to the one in which he lives alongside the land.

The homes would have beautiful views of the bay and would be in high demand and sell quickly because of their centrality in town. "Everything is within a three kilometre radius of this erf," Klue said.

The land will have to be rezoned.

Klue said: "A quality housing development will uplift the area."

A public participation meeting organised by the municipality about the erf was held on Thursday, 10 September. Residents made their recommendations at this meeting and they were received well by municipal officials.

The erf is in Ward 6. Mark Furness is the town councillor for Ward 6.
