MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) says it is making good progress with its project to upgrade the portion of the R102 between Hartenbos and Great Brak River.
Spokesperson Byron la Hoe says the portion between Tergniet and Wolwedans is also on track.
The R182 million project started in January and is expected to be completed by mid-2020.
There are currently seven areas where work is being undertaken: upgrading of the road from the Monte Christo intersection to the Little Brak River bridge, upgrading of the road through Riverside Village, construction of a concrete culvert at Riverside Village, upgrading of the R102 between the Impala road intersection and the DR1578 at Tergniet (road is currently closed), upgrading of the R102 between Tergniet and Great Brak River and construction of the roundabout at Great Brak River.
Also included is the upgrading of the DR1578 from Tergniet to Amy Searle Street. Half-width construction, involving the closure of one lane, will take place in sections with stop/go controls to manage the flow of traffic.
There are currently four stop/go control points.
Monte Christo intersection
This is a daytime control point that allows access to Swan's Nursery in the section under half-width construction. Because the volume of traffic is low, there are minimal delays.
Riverside Village
This is a 24-hour control point that controls traffic through Riverside while the road is under construction. The waiting period here is about five minutes.
R102 between Tergniet and Great Brak River
This is a three-way, 24-hour control point to manage traffic between Tergniet and the entrance to the Total fuel station. The waiting period at this control point is usually about five minutes, but may be longer when construction equipment is being moved.
Between Reebok Stene and Amy Searle Street
This is a three-way, 24-hour control point with a waiting time of about five minutes. La Hoe says that to date, R3,2 million has been spent on targeted enterprises, and 10 799 person days of work have been created for people from the Mossel Bay municipal area.
