MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Considerable earthworks have taken place on the the DR1578 between Reebokstene and Tergniet and on the steep section of ground up to Reebokstene.
The work was required to reduce the steep grade on the hill and to construct an overtaking lane.
The construction sequence of this section of road, while keeping it open to vehicular traffic, is fairly involved and construction works must now also take place at the Sandhoogte/DR1578 intersection.
New stop/go
"To do the works at the Sandhoogte/DR1578 intersection, two stop/go traffic control points will be introduced at the intersection. One will be positioned on the approach on the Sandhoogte Road and one on the DR1583 at the sewage works.
"These two stop/go positions will be controlled simultaneously with the current stop/go control points on the R102 and at Tergniet. There will be a slight delay for vehicles travelling towards Reebokstene, but once the main earthworks at the Sandhoogte/DR1578 intersection are complete, the contractor will try to introduce temporary slip lanes," Mossel Bay Municipality spokesperson Colin Puren said.
Ahead of programme
By introducing the extra stop/go control points at this stage to construct the Sandhoogte/DR1578 intersection, it has become evident that the DR1578 can be completed and opened in its entirety ahead of programme. This should be highly advantageous to all using the DR1578.
The entire stop/go system will consist of six stop/go control points. The construction team believes the benefits of attempting to get the roads open ahead of programme will benefit all road users and other parties.
Motorists should note the stop/go provisions on Sandhoogte Road that form part of the total upgrade of the road network in the area.
