MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Two Mossel Bay men will spend some time behind bars following their recent sentencing for two separate assault cases involving a stabbing and a panga attack.
In the latest matter, the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court handed the 25-year-old Mark-Lee Steyn two sentences on 8 July after he had been found guilty of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (assault GBH) and domestic violence.
The KwaNonqaba Police Station’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp, said Steyn had struck his 21-year-old brother in the face with a panga on the evening of 21 October, leaving him with an open wound to the left side of his face.
Constable Makhosonke Dyiba was assigned to the case and on 11 June, Steyn was found guilty of the two charges and sentenced to two years on each. The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, meaning that he will effectively spend two years behind bars.
In the second matter, the 49-year-old Anele Malobola was sentenced to five years’ direct imprisonment for the stabbing of a woman behind the KwaNonqaba Police Station at about 23:30 on 11 June 2023, with a sharp object.
The KwaNonqaba Police Station’s Sergeant Ella Mentoor took on the case.
Malobola was charged with assault GBH, of which the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court found him guilty in April and sentenced him to five years behind bars on 1 July.
Kapp said the station’s management has commended both detectives for their hard work, which helped secure these two separate sentences.
He said often, the courts will hand down suspended sentences, which results in perpetrators of serious crimes like assault and domestic violence spending little or no time behind bars. He said it was thanks to the good investigative work and solid evidence Dyiba and Mentoor had collected that led to the sentences.
Kapp also lauded the prosecutors for their work in the courtroom on these cases.
