MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A man who thought he did another a good deed was fleeced of thousands of rands when he attempted to withdraw money from an ATM at the Kwanonqaba Mall on Monday, 28 August.
Tembela Mjuza told the Mossel Bay Advertiser he went to the mall at 06:45 to withdraw money and he noticed a receipt stuck in the machine.
He called one of two men who had just walked away from the machine to point out that, presumably, they had forgotten to remove the transaction receipt. One of the men returned and repeatedly pressed a button on the machine before again heading to a grey, GP-registered vehicle.
Tembela, thinking nothing of it, then inserted his own card and PIN in an attempt to withdraw cash.
His card, however, got stuck in the machine and within minutes he received SMSes indicating that, in total, R3 020 was withdrawn from his account without the machine dispensing any cash. He then noticed that the grey vehicle was leaving directly after the cash was withdrawn.
"I suspect the occupants of the vehicle may have had a computer connected in some or other way to the ATM and that they had somehow moved the money from my account."
When Tembela reported the matter to a security guard at the centre, he says he was told that the cameras do record, but cannot replay any images. It was said that this had been a problem for quite some time.
"I immediately notified my bank and was told it would investigate the matter. I reported the matter to the KwaNonqaba police. I would appreciate other victims of a similar scam to contact me on 082 714 0590."
The investigating officer is Sgt Campher of the KwaNonqaba police (044 606 5600). Anyone with information is requested to contact Sgt Campher. All information will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.
