The laboratory was constructed as part of an initiative driven by the University of the Western Cape's Science Learning Centre for Africa, which resorts under the Faculty of Education.
The project was undertaken by the UWC in conjunction with the Garden Route Casino Community Trust and Garden Cities-Archway Foundation. Mr Kim Gibson, from the Garden Cities-Archway Foundation, said that they are aware of the increasing need in education and that the foundation is delighted to be able to address these needs. The Mossel Bay laboratory is the third science laboratory his foundation has been involved with.
Mr Robin Seabrook, manager of the Garden Route Casino, added on a more personal note that he had great fun in science class when he was at school and therefore believes that science makes creative minds go further.
Professor Shaheed Hartley from the UWC's Science Learning Centre for Africa, said that science and maths are currently the main focus areas in education in the Western Cape, due to pass rates not being on standard. He mentioned that science can be used with great success to harness an interest amongst learners to study, as it also instills an appreciation for reading and, therefore, learning.
According to professor Hartley, there is an important link to be made between exposure to science at primary school level and the results created at secondary school level, because interest in science generated at an early stage in primary school shines through in later years of education.
Professor Hartley also said that only schools with dedicated principals en science teachers are targeted and will qualify to be considered for the construction of a science laboratory. He therefore commended Mr Briesies and his staff for their commitment and pledged that the UWC will support their efforts with ongoing enthusiasm and guidance.
