MOSSEL BAY NEWS - New buildings and businesses have sprung up in KwaNonqaba, Mossel Bay, over the past few months.
These include a pharmacy and fast food restaurants. A filling station will also be opening soon.
There appears to be an economic boom, with new job opportunities created.
Mossel Bay Municipality's director of Planning and Economic Development, Carel Venter, says the municipality adopted a new town planning scheme by-law which incorporated new innovative mix-use zoning in 2018.
"This particular zoning was specifically allocated along Adriaans and Bill Jeffrey avenues. The zoning allowed the creation of more business opportunities on properties bordering these streets."
Venter says the next phase of development to attract economic activity to KwaNonqaba is the development of the Louis Fourie Corridor.
"It is proposed the area south of Louis Fourie Road will be developed to offer the same type of economic activities as in Voorbaai."
Venter says the need for informal trading spaces and small businesses in areas surrounding the KwaNonqaba Mall was identified in the municipal Integrated Development Plan.
Trading spaces
Informal traders are spotted regularly selling their goods outside the KwaNonqaba Mall on both Mayixhale Street and Adriaans Avenue.
"As part of formalising the creating of trading spaces, the municipality engaged with the Shoprite group, an anchor tenant at the mall, which indicated its support.
"The Entrepreneur Forum supported the development of the informal trading area on Mayixhale Street and Adriaans Avenue. Such plans are still in the conceptual phase and will serve before council before the end of 2023."
In the meantime, the municipality is busy with the Supply Chain Management Process to set up informal trading spaces. The first phase will be implemented this year, with further roll-out over the next few years.
Venter says the municipality is also exploring similar opportunities in Crotz Street, which is reserved for local economic development. For this project, the municipality has applied for funding. Upon approval, this project too will be implemented.
In the meantime, the Mayixhale Beehives and space zoned for light industrial activity, next to the KwaNonqaba Police Station and KwaNonqaba waste transfer station respectively, as well as space in the existing Kwano Business Park, are readily available.
Land across from the filling station, currently under construction, was recently sold by the municipality for the creation of business opportunities. A site plan has been approved for the development.
