MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A qualified lifeguard who has dedicated his time to lifesaving at De Bakke Beach over several seasons recently became a statistic of violent crime in Mossel Bay.
The Surfer Kids non-profit organisation surf coach and community co-ordinator, Sinesipho Ngungu, was violently attacked and injured during the weekend of 3 February apparently while he was walking home from the Dias & Port Festival.
Ngungu started working for The Surfer Kids in July 2017.
In November last year he assisted in the rescue of a man from Rastatt in Germany, Jörg (78), who prefers that his surname not be used.
Jörg was swept out to sea on Thursday, 30 November.
The Surfer Kids core surf programme supervisor, Andries Matthysen, and Sinesipho were on the beach busy with training when they spotted the tourists in trouble.
They paddled out to assist.
Sinesipho pulled out the second person, who was in shock while Andries struggled for some time to get the German tourist out.
When Andries got Jörg to the beach, Sinesipho jumped into action, using years of lifesaving experience and immediately started CPR.
It took Sinesipho about 15 minutes, and with Andries' help they successfully resuscitated him before he was rushed to Life Bay View Hospital for treatment.
