MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A local military veteran is outraged at the sight meeting him earlier today, Sunday 26 September at the Point’s Cenotaph, where vagrants seemed to have set up camp.
According to member of the St Blaize MOTH Shellhole, Anthony Janse van Rensburg, human excrement and soiled clothing was found. Graffiti has also been applied to plaques at the scene.
“My wife and I decided to start our morning off by appreciating our beautiful town, having an early coffee at the Point. But being a MOTH, we ended up entering the Cenotaph before continuing.
The Cenotaph is a war memorial for fallen soldiers at the Point. The names of all Mossel Bay Soldiers who perished in WW1, WW2, the Korean War, the Border War and Iraqi War are inscribed on the face of the Cenotaph.
“The Cenotaph is normally not locked as anyone wishing to pay respect to these heroes, may do so at any time. We were met with a scene of total disrespect and desiccation of our War Memorial. There is some superficial damage to some of the plaques containing names.
“The Cenotaph was used as a camping spot with evidence of some sort of ritual having taken place. Bedding and evidence of a shelter that was erected was found together with a fair amount of rubbish.”
The MOTH Shellhole in Montagu Street earlier this month, as well as last week, was also vandalized when several windows were broken.
Graffiti applied to a plaque at the scene.
This plaque was also vandalised.
