MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Animals also suffer from cancer, but there is very little support for them.
SAACA (Southern Africa Animal Cancer Association) was formed in 2020 and is the first organisation in Africa to focus on cancer and animals. SAACA's main mission is to fight for the health of animals, who cannot speak for themselves.
Cancer has always been seen as a human illness, but animals are also diagnosed and die of cancer. In one study, it was found that 45% of the dogs that reached 10 years of age or older died of cancer.
SAACA will be introduced into the Southern Cape by means of a potjiekos competition on Saturday, 28 May at Dibiki Holiday Resort.
According to SAACA's representative in Mossel Bay, Freddie Faul, funds raised will be used to fund research in animals with cancer. SAACA has teamed up with Onderstepoort, the faculty of veterinary science at the University of Pretoria that will conduct research among animals with cancer.
Sterilisations in the rural areas as well as educating the public on the topic will be done, using the funds.
Teams of a maximum of four members can enter the potjie competition at R100 a team.
Each team must prepare a pot to feed 10 people. Apart from the four plates of food for the team, each entry needs to sell six tickets/plates at R50 each as part of the fundraiser.
Any type of pot can be entered and there are prizes for the winning pot and runners-up. For more details, Freddie (083 560 2457) can be contacted.
If potjies are not your talent, you can always make a donation or buy a plate of food.
