MOSSEL BAY NEWS - An article published in last week's edition of the Mossel Bay Advertiser, about feral cats at the harbour, drew 97 comments and 24 "shares" after it was posted on the Advertiser facebook page.
These are more than is usual for articles posted on the Advertiser facebook page.
The article was published following a complaint by a Mossel Bay resident on facebook that the cats were a nuisance to restaurant patrons and caused "a stench".
By far the majority of facebook posts in response to the article were in support of Gean MacLeod, who feeds the feral cats just outside the harbour precinct and uses a catch, neuter and release system to keep this feral colony under control.
It was noted in the Advertiser article that MacLeod is supported in her efforts by well-known Hartenbos vet Dr Frans de Graaff, who had provided comment in the article, defending MacLeod's project, Harbour Cats, which she operates as a trust. MacLeod herself had chosen not to provide comment to the Advertiser, although she was asked several times.
The majority of the facebook posts regarding the article, agreed with the operations manager of the restaurants who had been interviewed for the article, noting that the cats were not a nuisance. A number of posts also noted that there was no smell of urine in this area.
In one of the posts it was said the cats were a threat to marine bird species.
