MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay SPCA had to attend to a dog whose ears had been cut off on Friday, 20 August.
The SPCA received an anonymous call about the dog. It was on a property in KwaNonqaba.
The dog owner, who is believed to be the perpetrator, was living behind the property in a shack. He has disappeared.
Inspector Colleen Thysse of the SPCA responded to the call-out. The animal was in severe pain and the wounds had not been attended to.
Thysse brought the dog to the SPCA and proceeded with basic treatment to alleviate the pain and suffering. SPCA vet Dr Dempsey de Lange was called in to assist.
Liefde
Garden Route SPCA operations manager Louis Struwig said: "The dog is now called Liefde."
In instances of animal cruelty, the procedure is that the SPCA investigates the case and also lodges a written complaint of animal cruelty with the police. The police open a docket and work in conjunction with the SPCA.
Thysse described Liefde as a "loving dog, with the liveliest eyes imaginable". He is a male mixed breed and is estimated to be four to five months old.
She said that despite the dog's trauma, he was now happy at the SPCA and wagging his tail.
Struwig appealed: "Please help the SPCA to assist those without voices, by reporting animal cruelty. Call our emergency line (072 287 1761).
"Your information will be treated in the strictest confidence."
He also asked that people donate much-needed funds to the Garden Route SPCA, which consists of two branches - one in Mossel Bay and the other in George.
The banking details are: Garden Route SPCA, Standard Bank cheque account 060823216, branch code 750214.
