MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A 35-year-old man was arrested in Bakke Street, Mossel Bay, last night, 3 August, for the possession of abalone with an estimated value of R13 000.
The Southern Cape police’s spokesperson, Sergeant Chris Spies, said acting on a tip-off, the Da Gamaskop Police went out to Bakke Street where they found two men.
A scuffle ensued, leading to a bag of abalone falling out one of the men’s backpack, and the other man fleeing.
Spies said during the search for the fleeing man, they found a further 46 units of abalone.
The first man was arrested and the abalone was confiscated. Spies said he remains in police custody and will appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.
He is facing charges of resisting arrest, unlawful possession of abalone and assault common. He said the police are still hunting the second suspect.
“The Western Cape police management commended these members for their vigilance, which led to the confiscations and arrest. These interventions will go a long way to bring unlawful harvesting of the valuable living marine resources along the coast to a halt,” said Spies.
