MOSSEL BAY NEWS -The KwaNonqaba/Mossel Bay SANCO (SA National Civic Organisation) representatives recently held constructive discussions with the Mossel Bay municipal manager, Adv Thys Giliomee, and the executive management of the municipality.
Under the SANCO leadership a community garden was created, where food is produced for local soup kitchens and people identified as being in need.
The SANCO leadership requested assistance with the project as it does not derive any profits from it and it uses the vegetables to feed the poor and indigent people in the community.
Several concerns were raised, among others the illegal occupation of open land by people who are erecting informal dwellings.
SANCO expressed its concern that land, intended for churches and other social services, is willfully and illegally occupied by people who in turn also sell off the land to unsuspecting victims.
SANCO mentioned the shortcomings of some of the formal housing made available to residents in Elangeni, and raised concerns about the lack of proper sanitation and facilities.
It reminded the municipality of promises to build ablutions for the elderly in Ward 1, and asked for feedback on the progress of this project.
The SANCO executive also questioned why residents had to pay for the use of the community halls when they were needed for funerals.
The indigent policy was again explained at the request of the SANCO members, who also raised concerns about unemployment and the long waiting times at local clinics.
Anyone who may wish to assist the food garden may call 078 754 1474, 072 096 0883 or 072 096 3880.
