KWANONQABA NEWS - KwaNonqaba Police Station interns Nicole Muller and Mivuyo Mofu have been volunteering at the station's victim-friendly room for almost a year now, helping victims of domestic abuse feel safe when asking for help.
The pair, who have been interns at the police station, also for a year, are based in a wooden building, just behind the Community Service Centre (CSC) at the police station.
They are often the "first port of call" for anyone wanting to talk about a domestic violence case, or needing help with a protection order.
Muller and Mofu say that mainly they deal with survivors of domestic abuse, who come to the victim-friendly room.
The duo see about eight people a day. "This is a safe place for people to come to, to tell us what has happened to them," says Muller.
Muller says she and Mofu advise people on the next steps to take with regards to protection orders and even help them fill in forms. The two tell the victims what to expect after the protection order form has completed, what the court processes will be and so forth.
"This is a safe environment," she says. KwaNonqaba Police Station spokesperson Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp says the victim-friendly room is a private place, to come and relay incidents of domestic abuse away from the CSC, where other people are reporting other matters as well.
He said the room was founded in 2007, but the building the room is currently in is about four years old and was sponsored by the KwaNonqaba Community Policing Forum.
