GARDEN ROUTE | HESSEQUA NEWS - International Coastal Cleanup and World Cleanup Day are scheduled to take place on Saturday, 19 September, even with uncertainty of what the Covid 19 lockdown regulations on the day will be.
John Kieser, the national coordinator for the cleanup day, said Plastics SA and Ocean Conservancy know with certainty that poor waste management and littering are still a reality and that cleanups on this day will be desperately needed.
"To this end, we are finalising the preparation for the 2020 International Coastal Cleanup, World Cleanup Day and Clean-up and Recycle Week," said Kieser.
He said the world cleanup events were mainly focusing on non-coastal areas and it was rewarding to see more cleanups being planned for 2020.
The pre-event awareness campaigns have started, because this year's cleanup will look different from previous years. Social distancing, restrictions on public gathering and other safety concerns that have become part of our day-to-day lives, will need to be strictly adhered to by all participants.
"This the last call for registration, as more logistics will be required for this year's event. Experience has taught us that there is always a last-minute flood of requests for support so we would like to have the majority of registrations finalised as soon as possible," said Kieser.
To become part of the event, contact Clifton Donald (082 457 1135 or cliftondonald@lantic.net) to obtain registration forms.
On the registration, people are presented with four choices for coastal a cleanup. It can either be an audited event (using the International sheet and/or the South African Dirty Dozen sheet), or it can be an unaudited cleanup, but making use of the Clean Swell app as a tool for cleanup data collection.
For the World Cleanup events, there are none of these choices but as in the past, resources must be supplied to ensure support for the project.
Due to the pandemic, the Caroline Reid Award occasion was changed to a biennial event.
