MOSSEL BAY NEWS - At the open monthly municipal council meeting held on 29 August, portfolio chairman for Finance, councillor Mark Furness and portfolio chairman for Infrastructure Services, councillor Anton Dellemijn, were given new titles.
Both councillors were awarded the title of "alderman" for their service as councillors of the municipality, in terms of a municipal bylaw.
Section 7 of the by-law states the following regarding aldermanship/alderladyship:
"(1) Aldermanship/alderladyship will be conferred on a serving councillor of Mossel Bay Municipality as follows:
(a) Any member of the municipal council becomes an alderman/alderlady upon commencement of his/her term as mayor, deputy mayor or speaker of the council.
(b) Any member who obtains a minimum of 15 points on the following scale:
(i) one point for every year's service as a councillor at one or more municipalities and it need not be continuous; and
(ii) one additional point for every year's service as a member of the Mayoral Committee/Executive Committee."
Councillors Dellemijn and Furness comply with the prescribed criteria in terms of Section 7(1)(b), in that they have obtained a minimum of 15 points as required.
Both Dellemijn and Furness have been serving as councillors and mayoral committee members since 10 August 2016 to date and, therefore, both have 16 points.
